It was my first time travelling to Jordan and I decided to head straight down to the desert of Wadi Rum upon arriving in Amman, the vibrant capital of Jordan.
If you’re planning a trip down to the beautiful desert of Wadi Rum, here are some options on how to travel from Amman to Wadi Rum Jordan.
In this blog post, I will go over options including transportation options, costs, and conversions to USD.
I. Transportation Options:
- Private Car Rental:
- Renting a car offers flexibility and convenience.
- Several car rental agencies operate in Amman.
- Average cost: JOD 35-50 per day (USD 50-70).
- Public Buses:
- JETT and Trust International Transport are two major bus companies in Jordan.
- Buses depart from Amman’s Tabarbour or Abdali bus stations.
- Average cost: JOD 7-10 (USD 10-14) per person, one-way.
- Shared Taxis:
- Shared taxis (known as “service taxis”) provide a budget-friendly option.
- Look for taxis near Amman’s South Bus Station or the Abdali area.
- Average cost: JOD 10-15 (USD 14-21) per person, one-way.
II. Traveling from Amman to Wadi Rum:
- Private Transfer:
- Booking a private transfer with a reputable tour operator or hotel is convenient and comfortable.
- Expect a travel time of approximately 4 hours, depending on traffic.
- Average cost: JOD 80-120 (USD 113-170) per vehicle, one-way.
This is what I ended up using since I arrived in the evening and knew it would be a long trek down to Wadi Rum so I had arranged a private driver to pick me up from the airport in Amman and it took roughly about 5 hours (with a pit stop in between).
I paid 120 JOD ($169 USD) each way 😭 which in total cost more than my flight there.
- Public Bus: (the most cost-effective method)
- Take a bus from Amman to Wadi Rum Village or the Visitor Center.
- Buses depart in the morning, and the journey takes around 4-5 hours.
- Average cost: JOD 8-10 (USD 11-14) per person, one-way.

In conclusion, whether you prefer the flexibility of renting a car, the affordability of public buses or shared taxis, or the convenience of a private transfer, there are various options available for travelling from Amman to the breathtaking desert of Wadi Rum.
